A Rough Guide to Non-Awkward Hugging

I hereby declare 2012 "Year of the Non-Awkward Hugs".

A year of NO A-Frames...

A year without ANY Sideways Hugging... (it is not your friend.  It is not even really a hug.)

There is no need to resort to the Pat-Pat-Hug.
You are no less manly for your lack of back-patting.

I am not a hot potato.  You can maintain contact for a full second if you like.

Lifting people off the ground is considered impolite.

And please, please, ALWAYS go left.

The important this is not to be afraid of the hug.  A good hug is a confident hug.

Now go forth, to hug in peace!

(Happy New Year)

Oh no! Now there is even more pressure to give good hugs!!!

Why is the awkward hugger identified as a ginger? I have always known gingers to be excellent huggers.

Aha! But notice the mysterious ginger hugger is also role-modelling the correct technique too!

Most guys when they hug go for punches to the back rather than pats. I like making things awkward on purpose by rubbing instead of patting on the back.

Nice post Anna by the way.

I disagree with this... why do you get to set the rules!?

I find much of the awkwardness comes from not knowing if the other person is going to kiss first, and worse, if they are going for the american "one-kiss" or the french "two-kiss" or the cheeky "three kiss!" It's a mine-field out there :)

I couldn't agree more! That is my number one cause of awkward moments.

Reckon you can add instruction about approaching gently, no grabbing and mashing, so that I can send this to a friend of mine? And maybe deleting this comment before I do that...

I think it could be useful to also add, when person A is hugging person B, person A should not knock person C's wine glass into C's teeth with A's elbow...
